Although I do not fully agree with some of the points you mentioned, I totally respect your point of view, and that's understandable.
Of course, a work-life balance is a must. Everybody should have a good balance and should be able to reconcile between work and private life. However, this is not at all the point of the story.
Imagine Apple is hiring a new employee for a given position. Would they hire someone who's passionate about Apple's mission, view and products or hire someone that has absolutely no interest and just thinks about the money and the conditions? What do you think? Logically I'd hire the one who is passionate, even if they're less experienced. As @Michael said, this creates a better working atmosphere and culture. It also promotes the passion and elevates the team spirit.
PS: we're not looking for code-splitting machines but rather people who meet the requirements.
